Victor Hospital expands its Nephrology Services

Climatic conditions have significant implications on our physical health. Rising temperatures and an agriculture based population in rural Goa has been one of the main reasons for higher number of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients in South Goa. A Urological Medical Camp study on the prevalence of renal disorder in Canacona, Goa revealed 40% people with kidney stones. Around 31.5% population of Goa have age-related decline in kidney function and the risk is higher. It has also been noted that the Covid 19 virus has led to an increased acute kidney injury increasing the need for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).,

Victor Hospital currently has a 30 bedded dialysis unit. It is definitely the best centre for renal replacement therapy. It also has a Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) machine which is better than regular dialysis as blood flow is lower and 24 hours. CRRT machines have evolved into devices specifically designed for critically ill patients. Victor Hospital is empanelled with Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana (DDSSY) which covers dialysis and other related treatments.

Victor Hospital is expanding its nephrology services to reach out to the people of Goa. It is proud to empanel with Dr. Jalal Ahmed as a full time Consultant. Dr. Ahmed specializes in chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease, obstructive renal disease, urinary tract infection and pre & post-transplant care. He has expertise in the field of kidney biopsies and management of transplant recipients. He also has experience in dual organ transplantation – liver/kidney and kidney/pancreas. Dr. Jalal Ahmed has to his credit more than 230 renal transplants. While Dr. Jalal is available round the clock at Victor Hospital, he is also available for consultation at Dr. Dhillons Hospital, Canacona, Daffodils Hospital, Vasco and at Dr. Uday Singbal’s Hospital, Ponda.

Just to highlight a recent case where an elderly gentleman from Margao was admitted in the ICU of Victor Hospital with multi organ dysfunction affecting his liver, lungs and blood. He was reported with a high creatinine value of 6.  Under the medical management of Dr. Jalal, he underwent 1 session of dialysis and with proper medication, his creatinine levels were reduced. He was successfully treated and is doing well now.

As we celebrate World Kidney day on 10th March, Victor Hospital is pleased to announce its expansion of the Nephrology Department with 10 additional beds included in the dialysis unit to meet the ever increasing demand for dialysis treatment. To further commemorate this day, Victor Hospital has organized a “Walkathon” from the hospital to Margao Municipality and back. This is in view of the fact that a new study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that regular walking helped CKD patients to overcome cardiovascular conditions and thereby enjoy a longer life. Yet another initiative to celebrate this occasion, Victor Hospital has also planned an awareness talk on “How to improve kidney health” by Dr. Shital Lengade MD, DM (Nephrology) & Dr. Jalal Ahmed DNB (MED), DNB (Neph.) on Thursday, 10th March 2022 from 4 pm to 5 pm at Hotel VIVA, Malbhat, Margao followed by healthy snacks and refreshments planned by its very own Nutritionist. In continuation to this initiative Victor Hospital is organizing “Free Kidney Screening Camp” from 10th March 2022 to 17th March 2022. The key objective behind organizing this camp free of cost is for health awareness among individuals in society. Camp includes tests like Random Blood Sugar, Serum Creatinine, Urine Protein, Ultrasound KUB, Consultation by Nephrologist  and  Nutritionist.
