Margao, Goa – Victor Hospital and Medical Services Pvt. Ltd. proudly announces a significant milestone with the launch of its Blood Component Centre, the first facility of its kind in the region.

This state-of-the-art facility further strengthens Victor Hospital’s leadership in emergency and specialized medical care by ensuring the availability of essential blood components, including whole blood, packed red blood cells (PRBC), leucoreduced PRBC, platelet concentrate, and fresh frozen plasma (FFP).

The centre has received formal approval and licensing from both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Central Licensing Authority (CDSCO) — a major advancement for Goa’s healthcare system.
Patients in South Goa had to travel long distances during critical emergencies to access blood components. This new centre bridges that gap, ensuring timely and potentially life-saving access for conditions requiring transfusion support, such as trauma and emergency, major surgeries, cancer care, anaemia, clotting disorders, thrombocytopenia, and severe dengue.

The Blood Component Centre was formally inaugurated on 14th June, commemorating World Blood Donor Day, in the presence of Hon’ble MLA Mr. Digambar Kamat, Chairperson of Margao Municipality Shri Damodar Shirodkar, Social Worker Mr. Yogiraj Kamat, Directors Mr. Varun Albuquerque and Ms. Roana Costa, MS & COO Dr. Ajay Gangoli, and Sr. Pathologist Dr. Eugene D’Souza.
A mega blood donation camp was also held, and the 11th edition of Health Vogue was released to mark the occasion.

Dr. Ajay Gangoli, COO of Victor Hospital, stated that this service not only enhances patient care, but also ensures safer outcomes for people across the state and beyond.
“This also affirms our commitment to reach more people and provide uncompromised care when it matters most,” he added.

Dr. Eugene D’Souza, M.D., Senior Consultant at the Victor Hospital Blood Centre, said,
“This is not just a milestone for Victor Hospital – it marks a turning point in healthcare delivery for South Goa. A key highlight is the availability of leucoreduced PRBC, which undergoes a special filtration process to remove white blood cells. The blood is thoroughly tested to ensure safe transfusions.”

Mr. Varun Albuquerque, Director of Alcon Victor Group, said,
“We are proud to establish an advanced facility that can make a real difference in emergencies. This Centre reflects our values—clinical excellence, timely access, and compassion. It is our way of giving back to the people of Goa by building something that saves lives every day.”

Mr. Digambar Kamat, Hon’ble MLA of Margao, who inaugurated the facility, stated,
“Victor Hospital continues to be a pillar of strength for healthcare in South Goa. With the Blood Component Centre, they are setting a new benchmark. I congratulate the entire team for this achievement and their unwavering service to the community.”

Ms. Roana Costa, Executive Director, added,
“Our efforts go beyond infrastructure. We want to build awareness and inspire a culture of regular blood donation. With our Health Vogue magazine, now in its 11th edition, we continue to create meaningful health conversations across Goa.”

Victor Hospital’s ecosystem is supported by a committed team of super-specialists, enabling the delivery of comprehensive, holistic care across departments.
In line with its mission to promote safe blood transfusions, Victor Hospital is also launching a voluntary blood donation campaign. Regular donation drives will be organized in collaboration with NGOs, community groups, and corporate partners to reduce dependency on replacement donors and ease the burden on families during crises.

As part of the celebration, Victor Hospital felicitated ten selfless blood donors on world blood donor day for their invaluable contributions to saving lives.
A special recognition was accorded to Mr. Sudesh Narvekar, who has donated blood over 100 times, serving as an inspiring example of dedication to humanity and community health.

Victor Hospital Takes a Major Leap in Cardiology Procedures: The Future of Heart Care with TAVR

Are you dealing with heart valve issues or considering heart surgery? You might be interested in a groundbreaking, less-invasive procedure that is changing the way heart conditions are treated—TAVR (also known as TAVI or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement/Implantation).

What Is TAVR (TAVI)?

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure designed to help patients with aortic valve problems, particularly those suffering from aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis occurs when the valve in your heart becomes narrowed and doesn’t open properly, leading to restricted blood flow.

Here’s the amazing part: instead of removing your damaged valve, the TAVR procedure simply inserts a new valve inside the old one. Think of it like placing a stent in an artery. A small catheter is used to guide a collapsible replacement valve directly to the heart, and once it’s in position, it expands and starts doing the job of regulating blood flow—giving your heart a new lease on life.

Who Can Benefit from TAVR?

TAVR is primarily designed for patients with severe aortic stenosis who cannot safely undergo traditional open-heart surgery. This includes individuals who are older, frail, or have other health conditions that make surgery too risky.

But here’s the exciting news: recent studies show that TAVR is also effective for low- and intermediate-risk patients—meaning more people can now benefit from this procedure!

Before the procedure, your doctor will recommend several tests, including:

  • Echocardiogram
  • Doppler Ultrasound of the Carotid Artery
  • CT scans of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis
  • Angiogram of the heart
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • And possibly some blood tests and other examinations

When Is TAVR a Better Choice?

TAVR shines in situations where traditional surgery might be too risky, offering a less invasive approach with a faster recovery time. For patients who are high-risk or inoperable for surgery, TAVR provides an excellent alternative with a significantly improved quality of life.

However, for those who are low-risk and can handle traditional surgery, open-heart surgery might still be the preferred option.

Choosing between TAVR and traditional surgery is a decision made by a heart team, who will assess your overall health, heart condition, and life expectancy.

Why Is TAVR a Game-Changer?

Here’s why more patients are choosing TAVR:

  • Less Invasive: Unlike open-heart surgery, which requires cutting open the chest, TAVR is performed through a small incision, typically in the groin. No chest scars, no long recovery times.
  • Quick Recovery: Patients can usually return to their daily routines much faster than with traditional surgery.
  • Immediate Relief: TAVR provides immediate improvement in symptoms like shortness of breath and chest pain, often within hours.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Patients who have undergone TAVR often report feeling much better, with enhanced heart function and reduced anxiety.

How Is the TAVR Procedure Done?

The TAVR procedure is guided by imaging technology (like ultrasound and X-rays) to ensure precision. Here’s how it works:

  1. A small catheter is inserted into an artery, usually in the groin.
  2. The collapsed new valve is carefully guided to your heart.
  3. The valve is expanded using a balloon or a self-expanding device, and it fits perfectly inside the damaged valve.
  4. Once the new valve is in place, the catheter is removed, and the artery is sealed.

The procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours, and the recovery time is typically shorter than open-heart surgery. Many patients feel the difference almost immediately!

What Are the Benefits of TAVR?

  • Minimally Invasive: No need for open-heart surgery or large incisions.
  • Faster Recovery: Get back to doing the things you love sooner.
  • Reduced Risk: Especially for high-risk patients who might not be suitable for traditional surgery.
  • Better Quality of Life: TAVR helps improve heart function and can significantly enhance your day-to-day living.

At Victor Hospital, we are proud to offer the latest in heart care with TAVR, ensuring our patients receive the best and most innovative treatments available. If you’re living with aortic stenosis or heart valve issues, speak with your doctor to see if TAVR might be the right option for you!

Victor Hospital Margao department of Radiology is highly equipped with the latest advancements and exceptionally skilled staff committed to providing accurate diagnosis and radiological services to patients. The Department of Radiology at Victor hospital is headed by Dr. Franzil de Miranda, Dr. Nikita Shet Kanekar and Dr. Nisha Alvares.

The Radiology department is well-equipped with a Phillips Cath lab, CT scan, 1.5 T MRI, high-end USG and color Doppler. Apart from performing diagnostic procedures they also perform CT and ultrasound-guided biopsies. For pain management in cancer patients, various procedures can help including celiac plexus blocks and nerve root blocks. These procedures can help avoid surgery in certain cases and allow patients to feel better earlier.

Recently Victor Hospital, Margao successfully treated a 90-year-old suffering from jaundice caused by liver cancer with ‘Y’ stenting. Since 8th November is commemorated as International Radiography Day, Radiologists and Radiographers contribute to the continuum of healthcare in a variety of ways. A key objective of the program is to increase public awareness of the role that radiology plays in the safety and treatment of patients.

As part of its commitment to excellence, Victor Hospital would like to congratulate its Radiology team on a successful ‘Y’ stenting performed on a 90-year-old female cancer patient. The woman presented with severe jaundice and MRI’s and CT scans performed on her revealed that she had liver cancer that was blocking the biliary duct. In addition, she developed a liver infection as well.

Dr. Franzil de Miranda, Consultant Radiologist – Victor Hospital states that “Percutaneous trans hepatic biliary stenting is a form of pin-hole surgery that can be performed under local anesthesia for cancer-related jaundice. As a result, her septicemia, which was unresponsive to antibiotics, was cured”.

Considering her advanced age and her fitness, surgery and general anesthesia would not be the right option for her due to the risks involved therefore the decision was made to insert a stent into the left biliary duct using an endoscope. In the next step, the interventional radiologists performed a procedure known as PTBD (percutaneous trans hepatic biliary drainage), which involved entering the blocked bile duct through the skin with just local anesthesia and draining pus from the liver itself. Through the previous stent, a metallic stent is inserted in a ‘Y’ configuration. A very important point to note is that both the jaundice, as well as the infection disappeared after the procedure had been completed. After a few days in the hospital, the patient’s appetite started to improve and she was discharged.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Victor Hospital is a well-known center providing a wide range of services for patients including treatment of facial injuries, diseases or abnormalities affecting the face, jaws and mouth, acquired, congenital and traumatic issues related to the jaws and facial region as well as developmental diseases of these areas.

The department headed by Dr. Akshata Kotharkar (BDS, MDS Maxillofacial surgery) has the advantage of sharing the best of medical facilities such as OT, Surgical ICU’S, 24 hour casualty, inpatient beds and advanced diagnostic aids like MRI, CT etc.

Dr. Akshata Kotharkar stated that “Pain in the jaw or muscles on the side of your face near the ears, possibly accompanied by a popping sound or difficulty in jaw movement, may indicate that the person is suffering from TMD —Temporomandibular Disorders. One such 31-year old male patient who came to the dental OPD of the Victor Hospital had a lot of pain in the jaw on the right side along with severe headache and was not able to sleep and eat well. This patient was treated conservatively with splints which he had to wear in his mouth for around 16-17 hours a day for 2 months and with some medications he was free of the pain and happy”.

TMDs are problems related to the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), which is a hinge joint that connects the lower jaw to the bones of the skull in front of the ear on both sides of the head. The TMJ is a complex joint system connected by muscles and ligaments which lets us move our jaw up and down and side to side, which enables talking, chewing, yawning, etc.

TMDs can be either on one or both sides of the face. It mostly affects women more than men, and is more common among the age group of 20 to 40 year old’s. TMDs often cause varying amounts of pain or discomfort to the patient and jaws get “stuck” or “locked” in the open- or closed-mouth position, or the patient hears clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when the mouth is opened or closed or while chewing which may be accompanied by pain.

To diagnose TMDs, the doctor takes a detailed medical history and conducts a physical exam. One may require full face X-rays to view the jaw, TMJ and the teeth, to rule out other problems. Other tests like MRI to show if the TMJ disc is in the proper position as your jaw moves or CT scan to show the bony details of the joint, may also be conducted.

In some cases pain can be managed by medicines and pain relief exercises but may not be enough in cases with extreme pain. For such cases, non-invasive treatment may be required. “Failure to seek treatment can result in serious complications and permanent damage. Hence, timely treatment and follow ups with your doctor to reduce the risk of potential complications are very essential in case of TMD’s” says Dr. Akshata Kotharkar.

Victor Hospital, Margao is empanelled under the DDSSY health scheme and has treated a large number of patients availing the scheme. The hospital is also empanelled with all major insurance companies for cashless treatment.
